A cleaner Future
Oregonians living adjacent to interstate highway systems have a higher incidence of asthma and worse overall health outcomes than their more advantageously situated neighbors.
We cannot talk about restoring Lower Albina without simultaneously centering environmental sustainability. The 10.5-acre Portland Public Schools redevelopment will serve as a pilot zone in our broader effort to develop America’s first climate-positive (carbon-negative) district.
Reconnection to the river
The 187-mile Willamette River is the lifeforce of Oregon, and it beats right through the center of Albina. It is where we have worked, lived, played, and worshipped. Reconnecting with the river is essential to restoring our very roots in this place.
In 2023, AVT successfully secured a $5 million grant from Metro Regional Government to begin acquiring waterfront parcels along the Willamette River. We subsequently began the process of scoping a waterfront park that would span just beyond the distance between the Steel and Broadway Bridges alongside local and regional government partners.
At 94 acres, the scale of our development area offers a unique opportunity to both improve life outcomes for our most marginalized communities and reposition our city as a national leader in environmentally sustainable urban planning, design, and construction practices.
